Find a safe place to sleep tonight
If you don't have housing lined up, call HELP4WV (833-435-7435) right now. They can connect you to emergency shelters. See our Housing Resources for women-specific shelters.

Get a meal
Dial 211 and ask for food banks or meal programs near you. Many churches and community centers offer free meals—no questions asked.

Get hygiene products
Food banks and shelters usually have toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and basic clothing. Don't be shy—these are here for you.
Get Your ID
You'll need this for everything

Start with a state ID
Go to any WV DMV office. Bring your release papers and any ID you have. If you don't have a birth certificate, the DMV can help you order one. WV DMV website

Get a birth certificate
If you don't have one, order it from WV Vital Registration Office. Cost is around $12. Call Legal Aid WV (866-255-4370) if you need help paying or navigating the process.

Get a Social Security card
Visit your local Social Security office with your ID and birth certificate. The card is free. You'll need this for jobs and benefits. Find your nearest office

Find a recovery meeting
If you're in recovery, find an AA/NA meeting or support group. Call SAMHSA (800-662-4357) for meetings near you. Check our Health & Recovery Resources.

Talk to someone
Reentry is hard. Find a counselor, case manager, or peer mentor who gets it. Many services are free through community health centers and reentry programs.
